Ulcerative colitis is a common disease affecting about 1 in 1000 of the population in the United Kingdom.' Recent therapeutic advances have improved our management of this condition, even though the aetiology remains unknown. Effective treatment of ulcerative colitis depends on making a precise diagnosis and determining the extent and severity of the disease. Crohn's disease, enteric infections, irradiation, and ischaemic colitis should all be excluded. This review covers drug treatment but other factors such as nutrition, psychological factors, risk of cancer in those with longstanding disease, and surgical options all form part of the management.
